Obie Trice is back with a very promising
sophomore effort, "Second Round's
On Me." By using the same drinking
theme as his first album, "Cheers",
Obie brings us back where he left off
with the 18 track offering of pure Hip-Hop.
Obie has enlisted many guests, including
his boss Eminem, Nate Dogg, 50 Cent, Akon,
and Trey Songz, just to name a few, to
raise their glasses.
With bullet fragments still in his head
from a drive-by shooting and the death
of his friend Proof, in the same year,
Obie really has a lot to say and he has
been quoted as saying, that many of the
songs were therapeutic.
With so much drama in his life, he really
did confront issues. One of the standout
tracks that confront issues is "Wake
Up" a great song that reaches out
to his Detroit community. Taking a different
turn on "Snitch" with Akon,
this cut has a nice catchy chorus but
with the "don't snitch theme,"
the songs lyrics take away from the album
as a whole. "Cry Now" is an
ode to the Obie haters, where he address's
his shooting. "All of My Life"
featuring Nate Dogg is another catchy
song track, with Nate Dogg bringing his
trademark R&B gangster and the lyrics
are ok. "Mama" featuring R&B
up incomer Trey Songs, is a cool track
with a nice laidback vibe, and a message,
that will make you listen closer to his
rhymes. But the best song on the album
is definitely the last one, "Obie
Story" a real biographical look into
Obie's life from beginning to present,
that basically adds on to "Mama".
Overall "Second Rounds On Me"
has many filler songs and the stand outs
are far and few between, and you definitely
have to skip through many to get to the
good tracks, however, Obie still has given
a solid effort with tight lyrics that
make since. But when he goes from positive
to negative back to positive he’s
sure to end up giving the listener mixed
messages.
