Calvin
Richardson
When Love Comes
[Shanachie Entertainment/Nu Mo Records]
Reviewed by: Low
Like many soul singers Calvin Richardson,
"The Soul Prince," got his start
with gospel music. He grew up in North
Carolina where he ran with K-Ci and Jo-Jo
of the successful R&B group Jodeci.
Richardson eventually formed his own R&B
group named Undacova and landed the single
"Love Slave" on the soundtrack
of the movie New Jersey Drive. He soon
went for delf and hooked up with Universal/Uptown
in which his first solo album 'Country
Boy' was released in 1999.
In 2003, he released his second album,
"2:35 PM." This second effort
produced hits such as "More Than
A Woman" featuring Angie Stone which
was nominated for a Grammy and "You've
Got Me High" featuring Slum Village.
Calvin is currently down with Shanachie
Entertainment/Nu Mo Records and he's bringing
about more soulful flavor with his third
album 'When Love Comes.' It's clear that
a lot of songs on the album seem personal
to Calvin especially, "Daddy To My
Kids." On this track he explains
that he doesn't care what his baby's mother
do or did, he just wants to be a daddy
to his kids. "Sang No More,"
the lead single of the album is definitely
a standout track with an old-school sound.
But the hottest song on the album is "Please
You Baby" and that's because the
track is sick and the lyrics are smooth.
Overall, the album has more highs than
lows. There's nothing like good R&B
music and we all need a dose of pure,
soulful R&B in our lives, well this
CD just might be the medicine.
